Dr. Mary Maj is a Professor at the St. George's University School of Medicine. She has been teaching genetics and biochemistry to medical students since 2011 and is the school's genetics content expert. Dr. Maj has a strong publication history in protein biochemistry and in diagnosing patients with inborn errors of metabolism and other rare genetic disorders. She was the first to identify the molecular cause of pyruvate dehydrogenase phosphatase-1 deficiency and developed an assay to test for the disorder.

Since the completion of the human genome sequencing, our understanding of cell and molecular biology has expanded at an extraordinary pace. Regions of DNA once dismissed as “junk DNA” are now recognized as critical elements that regulate gene expression and can influence the structure and activity of the cell. Investigators continue to discover new connections between well-characterized pathways and new modulators of the cell cycle. Advances in protein chemistry continue to elucidate the complexities of proteins involved in cell structure, extracellular matrix, and cell-to-cell communication between proteins expressed on the plasma membrane. This volume brings together exciting insights into the molecular mechanisms that define specialized cell types and explores how this knowledge can reveal insights into protecting healthy cells or triggering the death of transformed cells. We hope these chapters inspire readers as deeply as they have engaged the authors and editors of this edition.
