Vitamin D deficiency is a pandemic issue due to decreased vitamin D intake from food and lessened sunlight exposure. Attention is drawn to vitamin D and its role learned in notable clinical disorders such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancers including oral ones. Vitamin D is also very effective along with minerals in the protection of oral health. Vitamin D helps maintain the calcium-phosphate balance and contributes to the shaping of the bone. It is reported that with sufficient vitamin D level, the onset and progression of caries in the tooth structure can be stopped, the formation of caries can be reduced and enamel loss can be prevented. Vitamin D also affects the disease and health conditions of the periodontium. Anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory functions have a role in the pathogenesis of periodontal disorders. It can reduce bone resorption and suppress the inflammatory outcome related to periodontal diseases by increasing mineral density. Vitamin D has been linked with tooth decay, gingivitis, and tooth loss. Vitamin D, in particular, as a promising oral health-protective agent, is said to lessen the incidence of caries and periodontitis.

Over the recent time period, pediatric allergy clinics across the world have markedly changed their practice because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nowadays, clinics are not inclined to accept a patient demanding a new procedure / therapeutic modality during pandemic. All allergic diseases require continuous management and treatment, and their socioeconomic burden has been increasing worldwide. In this chapter, the aim is to focus on allergic diseases management during pandemic. During this time, patient follow-up, patient management, and diagnostic tests are real challenges. Limited face-to-face consultations and as much as use of telemedicine are currently seen as the major issues in the allergy practice. Face-to-face examination and treatment should be preferred only in vital situations. During COVID-19 pandemic, patient education, which is the most important step in the treatment of allergic diseases, has started to be done online. The prevailing opinion in the allergy community is that the treatment should not be interrupted, or dose reduction should not be made. According to the guidelines, it is appropriately recommended to carefully calculate the profit and loss of the treatment on a case-by-case basis.

The World Health Organization declared the current pandemic, known as severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, which began in China in December 2019. SARS-CoV-2 has the third highest recorded pathogenicity, with mortality rates varying from 6 to 10.5% based on comorbidity of the individual infected with the virus. Epidemiologic studies have critical importance in the fight against any disease. This chapter discusses demographic and epidemiologic literature data including age, gender, reinfection, death, and vaccination rates reported in numerous articles during the pandemic process from Türkiye.

Asthma is the most common chronic respiratory disease in childhood. A patient with asthma may experience symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. It is worth noting that respiratory symptoms, such as cough, wheezing, and shortness of breath, may also be observed in other acute or chronic diseases, including those unrelated to asthma. For example, persistent bacterial bronchitis (PBB) is one of the most common causes of chronic productive cough in young children (<5 years of age), accounting for approximately 40% of referrals to pediatric pulmonary clinics. PBB should be considered in children whose cough significantly improves within 2 weeks of antibiotic treatment. Suppose a child exhibits atypical symptoms or findings in the history and physical examination that may suggest an alternative diagnosis other than asthma. In that case, further investigations should be conducted for differential diagnosis. Additionally, if a child is not responding to maintenance therapy for asthma, the diagnosis of asthma should first be reconsidered. Since it is known that most children with asthma can be well controlled with basic prophylactic therapy, alternative diagnoses should be considered if a patient continues to complain of severe or recurrent respiratory symptoms despite all basic asthma management strategies.
